Here's a speech (email) by my last uncle:

My dear brothers, cousin, nieces and nephews,

Such as co-incidence, I was talking to my boss over lunch regarding what Dr Chiew (Ah Mah's favourite doctor) told me Ah Mah's health conditions. As most of you are aware, Ah Mah has all kinds of illnesses - High blood pressure, diabetes, highcholesterol, high uric acid, etc. Not sure if you all have noticed your "candy" box, I mean medicine box, there are easily > 15 different types of medicine in it. After each consultation, Ah Mah will carry one big bag of medicine out of clinic like walking out of NTUC supermarket (I will sometime joke about it to cheer her up).

Yesterday, Dr Chiew told me that he discovered that there is some trace of protein in Ah Mah's urine, i.e. her kidney is not functioning well due to combination of her illnesses particular diabetes and high blood. Told me that he has given her more medicine to control it and good news is that it is still in early stage and may be reversible.

What really hit me was not her health problem (cos I hear that from him all the time) but what he said to me about Ah Mah. He said that he would try to prescribe the best medication for her and hopefully she still can go on for another 10 years. Only 10 more years??? I always take for granted that she is and will always be there for all of us and little did I think about her age. As the author put it, I have always subconsciously thought that my parents would always be there with me, never growing old.

Since then whenever I think about it, my heart would just sink. I can't stop thinking about her and her difficult past, how strong she was when she was younger (let me tell you, she was as strong as a bull and I am not kidding), all the good foods she has prepared for us, how she took care of all of us when we were kids, how hard she had worked to sustain the 5 of us (she had to take on 2 jobs - morning as a factory worker and night as a dish washer in restaurant. Oh yes, also part time domestic maid).

It took the message to make me realised that Ah Mah and Ah Gong are not immortal. That they too will leave this world and all of us. Until then, we must make good use of our time together with them. Love them and treasure them when they are still around.

But I find it funny on the part tat he send the email to the whole family.
